"Oprah Winfrey (in O Magazine) 'defined joy as a sustained sense of well-being and internal peace—a connection to what matters.' I have found such joy at the Rocky Mountain Raptor Program where I am involved and appreciated by the staff and volunteers as we all are connected to the magnificent raptors of Colorado. What we are doing makes a difference and matters to the birds and the community as we strive to encourage environmental stewardship."
Janis joined the Raptor Program as a Volunteer Development Associate in March 2010. Janis is one of the staff members who volunteers her time and efforts in grant writing and other responsibilities. She works on the website, press releases and the e-News. Janis completed a Certificate of Nonprofit Management and a Certificate of Grant Proposal Writing from the University of Illinois—Chicago in 2010. She is a retired small animal veterinarian and does freelance medical writing and editing. She has had an eclectic career, involving for-profit and non-profit endeavors. She and her husband, Paul, owned a small animal practice in Georgia for 21 years. They moved to Colorado in 1997, where she worked in the veterinary medical pharmaceutical industry. Her non-profit career included five years as the medical editor for a national veterinary organization and two years at Larimer Humane Society as Director of Operations. In addition to career endeavors, she has volunteered in various non-profits. Some have been related to veterinary medicine on the local, state, and national level. Others include such things as assisting in a therapeutic horseback riding program and being a Santa’s helper for the elderly. She currently volunteers for the Poudre School District as a classroom helper at Laurel Elementary.
