RMRP Property Sale Will Help Future Dream Center Become Reality

child enjoying feathersAs it prepares to sell all or part of its 27.3-acre property, RMRP wants its supporters to know that after 30 years of healing raptors, providing environmental education, and surviving through a variety of economic climates, the program has only bright plans for the future.

“We are learning that this property is more ideally suited for commercial and residential development,” said Executive Director Judy Scherpelz. “Depending upon the buyer, we may consider keeping a small parcel on which we can build, or look for a suitable property elsewhere in northern Colorado. Building a public education and wildlife center is our primary goal for the next few years, and we hope to develop it into a regional attraction.”

Located just a few blocks from downtown Fort Collins, the Vine Drive location offers many financial benefits for businesses or developers compared to other properties in the area with similar zoning. There are significant State tax credits, deductions, exemptions, and incentives such as tax increment financing that come with the property. These incentives exist due to the property’s location within the Larimer County Enterprise Zone and the Fort Collins Downtown Development Authority (DDA).

“We see this as a very positive step for the Raptor Program, freeing up financial assets that will move us closer to achieving our dream,” continued Scherpelz. Selling part or all of the property would give the organization a stronger financial position to fulfill its rehabilitation and environmental education mission, which includes the development of the public wildlife viewing and education center.

RMRP still needs your gifts and in-kind donations to help with this year's crushing caseload which is 40% ahead of last year's record! Click here to support our lifesaving work.

RMRP_Land_With_Major_Streets_Toned_DownThe Raptor Program purchased the 27.3-acre parcel – located north of Vine Drive between Linden Street and Lemay Avenue – in 2005. It built three cage complexes at the site; one for recovering birds of prey (a raptor hospital), one for nonreleasable raptors that serve as education ambassadors at programs throughout the region, and a 6,000 square foot flight reconditioning building for raptors that are in the final stages of care before release. The Vine Drive location has been the program’s home since separating from Colorado State University at the end of 2006.

RMRP also houses many of its larger nonreleasable educational raptors at the Environmental Learning Center in east Fort Collins. Those birds would eventually migrate to the new facility.
