First_GHOW_Babies_2010_for_webIt's springtime in the Rockies and the earth is coming back to life. All around us, raptors are sitting on eggs and some of the first hatchlings are already born, opening their eyes and taking their first meal, which is brought to them by one of the parents.

RMRP rescues dozens of babies each year. Sometimes they get accidentally bumped out of the nest. At other times, the babies grow so fast that one is inadvertently pushed out. Spring storms create a steady stream of admissions to our facility when nests are destroyed or trees are blown down.

Trauma is the leading cause of admission to RMRP, but orphaned babies are the second most frequent reason. Babies need lots of “whole foods” such as mice and rats, initially cut into small pieces, but before long, these voracious babies are eating them whole. Click “Read More” for additional photos.

Photo: The first Great Horned Owl Babies of 2010. With their amazing appetites, they can easily consume several mice each day.
