| Tons Of Food Needed - No Kidding! |
RMRP needs 50,000 mice, or 7,000 rats in a big hurry! No kidding... Six orphaned Great Horned Owls have been consuming 24 oz. of mice every day for the past 6 months. That's about 30 mice a day - or 5,400 mice. And that's just 6 of our 200 admissions in 2010.Last year, 5 tons of food was donated, including 5,500 pounds of prairie dogs, to help us feed the 364 raptors we cared for. Unfortunately, we recently learned that those prairie dogs will not be coming this year. This means we are in the middle of a huge food shortfall. Curious about what 24oz. of mice looks like? CLICK HERE Here’s how you can help… SORRY, we cannot accept wild caught food because of the risk of disease in already immuno-compromised patients. The majority of food donated to RMRP is small mammals, which are crucial to healing raptors. They are naturally a part of raptor diets, they provide complete nutrition and essential casting material. "Healing raptors really need whole food diets," said Medical Director Gail Kratz. “Prairie dogs, mice and rats are the perfect raptor food.” We’re down to a few freezers with food. Normally this time of year we would have up to 10 freezers full. Needless to say, RMRP is scrambling to find other food sources. Tell your friends, family and critter-loving friends. Please help, the birds are counting on us. NOTE: Many helpful people call to ask if we can take wild caught mice and rats. Unfortunately, we do not as wild mice can be exposed to all kinds of sub-lethal toxins in the environment (from those people that do not like using live traps and prefer chemical control) that could affect the birds that consume them. The mice also carry a heavy parasite load. That can be a problem for those birds that are already compromised and stressed by being in a captive situation for rehabilitative care.
