Volunteer Roles

You can choose from a long list of volunteer openings that match your experience, available time, goals, and interests.

The majority of our volunteers want to learn about and work directly with the raptors, which involves:

  • learning how to clean cages
  • learning how to prepare food
  • completing daily records about each bird you have contact with
  • interacting with and feeding the raptors
  • maintaining the facility

Start With The Easiest Birds

As you advance through the basics, you will begin learning to handle raptors. You will start with the smaller, less aggressive birds. As you continue to learn handling techniques, the unique character traits of individual raptors, and become comfortable with what you are doing, you may work with larger and more challenging raptors. There is no timetable or pressure to move forward, you proceed at a comfortable pace through the various levels, as volunteer and raptor safety and comfort are our primary concerns.

The Medical Path

As your training progresses, you may choose to focus more on providing medical treatment. You will learn to assist in the capture and control of the birds for examination and treatment. You will learn to administer medications and assist in a wide variety of medical procedures, everything required to promote the rehabilitation and well-being of our raptors.

The Educational Path

You may also choose to assist in community environmental education programs featuring RMRP’s 30 Educational Ambassadors. RMRP makes more than 200 formal and informal presentations each year throughout Colorado. RMRP demonstrates through nonreleasable raptors that sustainable living requires respect for all living things. People leave our presentations with this understanding and the motivation to create change in their community.

Other Volunteer Opportunities

There are many volunteer opportunities at RMRP including:

  • office, phone, and clerical
  • data entry
  • writing (newsletter articles, proposals and grants, press releases, etc.)
  • indoor and outdoor maintenance
  • special events (such as our annual gala dinner auction)
  • mailings
  • rodent and live prey raising
  • the list goes on and on

In short, if you want to volunteer, we'll welcome you to join the RMRP “family.”
