Azulito

American Kestrel (Falco sparverius)

This little American Kestrel was rescued by RMRP in 2018, after he was hit by a car in Berthoud, CO. He had suffered some damage to his right wing, and part of his head had been scalped. During his admit to our hospital, almost all of the primary flight feathers on his right wing fell out.

His head wound healed nicely, but his flight feathers never regrew on his right wing. This left him permanently grounded, as he can’t fly well enough to hunt.

This smart, courageous little falcon then started his second life as an Educational Ambassador with RMRP. He has flourished in classrooms as a teacher, an inspiration, and a fierce face to represent Colorado’s wildlife. When he’s not out working, he enjoys spending time shredding his perches in his enclosure and hiding food bits in crevices for us to find later.

His name, Azulito, means “Little Blue” in Spanish. This is in honor of his beautiful blue edging he sports as a male Kestrel.
