Swainson’s Hawk

Swainson’s with Open Fracture – 10/31/08 from Brush, Colorado. This bird was emaciated and had an open necrotic fracture to the radius/ulna. The fracture was irreparable.

Old, Open Wounded Ferruge – 10/25/08 from Fort Lupton, Colorado. This hawk had a luxated elbow with an exposed and necrotic humerus wound, as well as femur fracture. These wounds were non-repairable.

Great Horned Owl, immature

Oily Great Horned – This young bird was underweight and had oiled feet and head trauma. Has been moved to a recovery cage, and has had the feet washed several times to remove oil. This owl is very feisty and is eating very well.

Fractured Wing Ferruge – 10/24/08 from LaSalle, Colorado. This hawk received non-repairable head and eye trauma and a fracture to the right humerus.

Owl Caught In Construction – 10/21/08 from Wellington, Colorado. This owl received general trauma while stuck in a new construction site. Trauma has resolved and this bird was released!

Injured Shoulder Red-Tailed – 10/20/08 from Brush, Colorado. Emaciated and with a right shoulder injury, this bird is currently bandaged in the critical care room. The hawk has been eating well and gaining weight.

Multiple Fractures Red-Tailed – 10/18/08 from Alliance, Nebraska. This bird came in with a fractured humerus and a fractured tarsometatarus through the joint. These wounds were too serious to heal.

Sharp-Shinned Hawk

Sharp-Shinned Window Strike – 10/16/08 from Livermore, Colorado. This little hawk received head trauma after hitting a window.  Despite supportive care, this bird died 10/24/08.

Old Fracture Swainson’s –  These fractures were non-repairable. 10/15/08 from Brush, Colorado. This bird came in emaciated and with an old, mal-aligned fracture to the left radius/ulna and humerus.

Wounded Red-Tailed Hawk – 10/15/08 from Firestone, Colorado. This hawk had wounds and soft tissue trauma to the right shoulder. The wounds have healed with wound care and the bird has moved out to a small recovery cage. The right wing has a slight droop, but the bird is showing some flight.

Old Fracture Sharp-Shinned – 10/15/08 from Livermore, Colorado. This bird had a non-repairable, open and necrotic fracture to the right humerus. Euthanized

Electrocuted Red-Tailed – 10/15/08 from Buckeye, Colorado. This hawk had a torn patagial tendon on the right wing as well as a radial fracture due to a possible electrical shock. These injuries were too severe to heal.

Emaciated Great-Horned – 10/15/08 from Longmont, Colorado. Emaciated and with head trauma, it was too late to help this bird and he died several days after admission.

Hawk Hit By Car – 10/10/08 from Loveland, Colorado. Probably hit by a car, this hawk has severe head trauma and a head tilt. In the critical care room, and is eating on its own. The bird is given a poor prognosis, but we are giving the bird some time for a chance to heal.

Great Horned Owl

Fractured Scapula Great Horned – 10/6/08 from Saratoga, Wyoming. This owl came in emaciated and dehydrated with a fractured right scapula. In our care, the bird is eating well, has had good weight gain, and the bandage has been removed. Currently out in a small recovery flight. The wing shows some drooping, but the bird also has had some flight.

Red-Tailed with Infections – 10/4/08 from Fort Collins, Colorado. This young hawk had extreme emaciation as well as an eye, sinus and mouth infection. The bird was too sick to recover.

Broken and Bruised Kestrel – 10/3/08 from Fort Morgan, Colorado. This bird came in with fractures to the left radius/ulna and necrotic bruising to the chest.  The wounds were too damaged to heal.

Broken Legs Barn Owl – 10/3/08 from Fort Morgan, Colorado. This Barn Owl received bilateral leg fractures and a right wing fracture, probably after being hit by a car. The fractures were too severe to be repaired.

Great Horned Hit By Car – 10/3/08 from Loveland, Colorado. This bird received head trauma and a proximal fracture in the left ulna due to being hit by a car. In the critical care room, and has had the wing bandage removed but still is in cage conferment. Holds the left wing with a slight droop. Due to fracture location, the prognosis is guarded.

Old Wound Red-Tailed – 9/30/08 from Eckley, Colorado. An old, necrotic and mal-alighted fracture brought this hawk in to the center. Unfortunately, the wounds were too damaged to heal.

Young, Broken Swainson’s – 9/29/08 from Wellington, Colorado. This young hawk had bilateral radius and ulna fractures that were irreparable and was also emaciated. Euthanized.

Multiple Fractured Red-Tailed – 9/28/08 from LaSalle, Colorado. This young bird received multiple wing and leg fractures that were too severe to be repaired.

Red-Tailed With Shredded Wings – 9/25/08 from Wellington, Colorado. The feathers on the right wing of this young bird were shredded, and the bird was showing some neurological signs. Tested positive for West Nile. The bird has moved to a recovery cage and now is waiting on the right wing feathers to molt.

Confiscated Red-Tailed – 9/25/08 from Elizabeth, Colorado. This hawk had been confiscated from illegal confinement by the Colorado Department of Wildlife. With a little extra care from RMRP, this bird was released!

Merlin

Fractured Wing Merlin – 9/23/08 from Centennial, Wyoming. This bird came in with a fracture to the right humerus, close to the elbow. She was in the critical care room with bandages for several weeks and recently has moved to a small recovery flight. She’s been showing some flight and lift, but the fracture is in a precarious location.

Shattered Humerus Eagle –

9/20/08 from Terry Bison Ranch near the WY border. The bird was given emergency, supportive care and xradiographs. Radiographs showed a fractured left humerus that was shattered at the shoulder and therefore not repairable. The bird was euthanized.

Great Horned Owl

KO’d Great Horned – 9/19/08 from Windsor, Colorado. This owl was trapped in a new construction and was knocked unconscious. The head trauma resolved, and the bird showed great flight and attitude.  This bird has been released!

Gunshot Owl – 9/19/08 from Fort Collins, Colorado. A probable gunshot caused wounds and bruising on this owl’s left chest.  The wounds healed with wound care and antibiotics. This bird has been released!

Great Horned Owl

Wounded Great Horned – 9/18/08 from Brush, Colorado. This bird came in with a fractured wing and a wound on the right side. In the critical care room, the wound was healing with wound care procedures, but the fracture was not showing any signs of healing. The fracture was deemed irreparable.

Cooper’s Hawk

Broken Pelvis Cooper’s Hawk – 9/17/08 from Lyons, Colorado. A window impact broke the pelvis of this hawk, who now has limited use of the legs. Currently in critical care, but it showing good progress. Since receiving care, the bird has recovered the ability to stand and perch and is gaining leg strength

Ferruginous Hawk, immature

Barbed-Wire Ferruge - 9/15/08 from Laramie, Wyoming. This hawk came in with a fracture on the right clavicle and wounds to the right wing from barbed wire.  The bird was given wound care, bandaging and cage confinement but the tendon and nerve were irreparably damaged.  Euthanized.

Fractured Leg Young Swainson’s – 9-15-08 from Platteville, Colorado. This young bird came in severely emaciated and with a fractured tibiotarsus (leg bone). Died shortly after admission with EM care only.

Electrocuted Great Horned – 9/12/08 from Scottsbluff, Nebraska. This bird had probably electrocution injuries to both wings and to the right foot. The injuries were too severe to be repaired.

Spinal Trauma Cooper’s – 9/11/08 from Loveland, Colorado. This bird hid a window, and received devastating head and spinal trauma. The injuries were too severe to be healed.

Short Eared Owl

Fractured Wing Short-Eared Owl – 9/11/08 from Fort Collins, Colorado. This little owl had head trauma, emaciation and a fractured left humerus. The head trauma has resolved. The bird had surgery for fracture repair on 9/17. Still in the critical care room as it is a tough fracture to repair. 11/15 The bird is still in critical care with the TIF intact and the radiographs were rechecked on 10/28.  These showed an incomplete healing of the fracture, but will recheck in 3 weeks to see in if the TIF can be removed.

Emaciated Osprey – 9/9/08 from Red Feather Lakes, Colorado. This bird was extremely emaciated and dehydrated. Died 9/10/8 after emergency care.

Eastern Screech Owl

Neurological Screech Owl – 9/9/08 from Kersey, Colorado. This tiny owl was hit by a car and received severe head trauma and blood in the left eye. His injuries resulted in some neurological symptoms. However, he has since been much improved and the trauma has resolved. Currently out in a large flight cage and starting mouse school. 10/7 Passed mouse school and has been released!

Emaciated Kestrel – 9/8/08 from Fort Collins, Colorado. This little bird seemed shocky, had severe emaciation and was dehydrated. Unfortunately, she died just after admission.

Barn Owl Hit Window – 9/7/08 from Sterling, Colorado. This owl flew into a window, and received head trauma. He also appears to have limited leg use. In the critical care room, and his leg use seems to be improving. 10/28 Passed mouse school and was released!

Kestrel Caught by Cat – 9/6/08 from Wellington, Colorado. This small hawk had fractures to the left metacarpus and wounds on the chest that may have been caused by a cat. Despite wound care, antibiotics and bandaging, this bird died 9/12/08.

Fractured Metacarpus Kestrel – 9/65/08 from Wellington, Colorado. This little kestrel came in with a fractured and wounded left metacarpus (tip of the wing) and was also emaciated. The fracture has healed, and she’s now out in a large flight cage gaining flight skills and will be starting mouse school. 10/7 Kestrel has passed flight and mouse school and was released!

Swainson’s Hit By Rock – 9/1/08 from Evans, Colorado. This baby Swainson’s was hit by a rock resulting in trauma and bruising to the right elbow. The trauma has resolved, but the bird missed migration so will be wintering with us in the large flight cage with the other Swainson’s kids! 11/15 Currently overwintering, but has good flight and feathers.

Burrowing Owl Hit By Truck – 8/30/08 from Rawhide. Found stuck in the grill of a truck, received some leg trauma which has nearly resolved. The bird now uses the right leg well. Still in the Critical Care unit, but has a good prognosis. Hopefully this owl will be able to be released for this year’s migration! 9/10 This bird has been released!

Lost Swainson’s Baby – 8/29/08 from Cheyenne, Wyoming. Great body condition and feathers, just missing parents. Released 8/30/08 into a kettle of Swainson’s Hawks headed for migration!
